5 out of 5 stars Very good Drive   September 7, 2010

Had this drive for awhile now and really enjoy it. It is small and portable and needs no other power source than USB. Works great on my HP mini.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Hard Drive   September 6, 2010

One of the cheapest (in price, not quality) external hard drives I've ever found. It's works just like a USB drive. You just plug it in, then drag and drop files. No software needed. Very simple to use. Also works with Linux, which is a huge plus for me.

5 out of 5 stars Works Flawlessly   September 5, 2010

I personally bought this item (the 640 gig model) for simply backing up music and pictures. Upon arrival, I plugged it in via the USB cable and Windows 7 recognized it and opened it. I then copied the folders I wanted to back up, hit paste in this drive, and about an hour later 60 gigs of music and pictures were saved onto a device barely larger than my iPhone.

No muss, no fuss. If you intend to use this as a full-time external hard drive, then I suppose you'd want to get the Seagate software to avoid the drive going to sleep issue I've seen other reviewers comment about. But if you have a ton of music, pics, and/or general stuff such as documents, spreadsheets, etc. etc. and would like to have all of them somewhere safe should your computer ever go belly-up, how much more can you ask for?

This device is simple, portable, and rather fast for only operating off the USB power supply. A definite 5-star rating.

3 out of 5 stars It's very slow when it was idle for 10+ minutes   September 2, 2010
Manuel Castro (MedellĂn, Colombia)
The drive it's as advertised and all you expect (small, easy to connect, decent transfer), but what I really don't like is the slow response after the PC has been idle for several minutes, for being and external drive I expected a faster response, but sometimes I have to wait for 5 minutes for the drive to save a simple Word document, and sometimes I even have to retry.

1 out of 5 stars Either defective out of the box or needs a Y-Cable To Get Power   August 30, 2010
Nick Trojan (USA)
Tried this drive on four different machines out of the box - 3 Macs, 1 PC. Result was the same for all - power light came on, the drive was never recognized. I followed the advice of one reviewer on here and waited for several minutes to see if the drive would show up, to no avail.

Went to the Seagate forums to see if there was anything I could do and read this:

"If your drive is powered from the USB port, try using a Y-cable, if not already.

A single USB port is current limited to 500mA. Your drive requires around 850mA to during spin up, and about 400mA thereafter. Sometimes you need to pick up power from two USB ports via a Y-cable."

If that's the case, why not include a Y-cable with the drive in the first place??? Just doesn't make much sense.

Or, as I said, it might have been defective. But, as it just plain didn't work out of the box for me, returning it and probably won't buy Seagate again.
